AI SOP vs video walkthroughs: which format wins

When a text SOP beats a video, when the video wins, and how to pick between the two categories without a religious argument.

In short
Text SOPs win when the reader needs to jump to a step, run the process in parallel, or come back to it in a month. Video wins for one-off walkthroughs, screen behavior that is hard to describe, and audiences who watch faster than they read. Most teams need both, and the tools that do one well rarely do the other well.

What each format is good at

Text SOPs

  • Scannable: eye jumps to the step number.
  • Searchable: Cmd+F finds the payment page.
  • Editable: a typo takes ten seconds to fix.
  • Runnable in parallel with the screen you are working on.

Video walkthroughs

  • Show behavior that is hard to describe in text.
  • Carry tone: hesitation, emphasis, walkthrough of a decision.
  • Faster to produce for a one-off request.
  • Better for audiences who prefer watching over reading.

How to pick between them

Ask how often the SOP will be run. Under three times, a video is often the right call. Over ten times, a text SOP earns its keep. Between, do whichever your team will maintain.

If video is the shape you need, the leader on our rubric is Guidde. If a hybrid works, Scribe and Tango both ship a video option on top of their text guides.
